I was twelve years old when I first heard of One Direction – four British lads and one Irish boy who took the world by storm after X-Factor. I was instantly mesmerized. It was the first time I witnessed a display of positive masculinity. Five teenage boys were brought together to sing, and voilà! Suddenly, I was immersed in a new world – staying literally Up All Night (their debut album), waiting for song releases, and sharing niche One Direction memes with friends.

I recall an interview where the interviewer asked, “Who’d they want to hit?” – aka, get intimate with. Harry Styles responded, “We don’t talk about our fans or women like that.” This was monumental for me, considering how many bands and pop stars openly objectified women. Yes, it was marketing, but their connection with fans felt genuine. They radiated joy and adventure, filming silly diaries and skits. Despite their fame and being a group of teenage boys (which can be very scary), I always felt safe and seen as a fan. I appreciated how they held their fans’ hearts with care and compassion.

My manic pixie dream boys will never be forgotten, even though they disbanded nearly a decade ago. Sadly, Liam Payne, a former member, passed away last week. Since then, I’ve seen an outpouring of love from the One Direction community, bringing people back together to grieve for Liam and the memories he and the band gave us. My TikTok is flooded with One Direction edits, old interviews, and inside jokes I still know by heart.

Once upon a time, One Direction was the only thing I looked forward to after school. At 23, I still feel the same unadulterated pure joy when listening to them.
